To the average person — and certainly to someone who’s never dealt with it before — Medicare can be intimidating and confusing. But the Alabama State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), part of United Way’s Area Agency on Aging, provides free, unbiased Medicare counseling to Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers. SHIP is a great resource for anyone who needs to sign up for Medicare, and for people who are already on Medicare but want to review their plan to make sure they have the benefits that are right for them.
What does this mean to you? If you’re looking for a great volunteer opportunity and enjoy working one-on-one with seniors, we could use your your help. We are seeking volunteers to assist during Medicare Open Enrollment (October 15th– December 7th) as well as year-round.
You don’t have to already be Medicare expert! We provide training for an assortment of different jobs. Volunteers are needed to help with numerous tasks, including day-to-day administrative duties, counseling of Medicare beneficiaries and education in the community. And we’re having a special meeting on June 26th, where you can learn more about what’s involved and decide if being a SHIP volunteer is type of community service you’re interested in.
Join us for a SHIP Volunteer Interest Meeting and meet our new SHIP Coordinator for Jefferson County.
